Jill Biden Arrives in Paris to Celebrate U.S.’s Return to UNESCO Membership

Paris, France – The First Lady of the United States, Jill Biden, has arrived in Paris to mark a significant moment in the country’s international relations. Her visit comes as the U.S. officially rejoins the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) after a five-year absence.

UNESCO, an agency of the United Nations, aims to foster global collaboration in the fields of education, science, and culture. It also designates World Heritage sites, which are recognized for their outstanding universal value. The U.S.’s return to UNESCO signifies a commitment to strengthening partnerships and leadership in international organizations, a goal set by President Joe Biden.

One prominent issue that UNESCO has recently addressed is the condemnation of Russia’s attack on a cathedral and other heritage sites in Ukraine. In response, UNESCO has dispatched a team to assess the damage caused by these attacks. This incident highlights the organization’s role in protecting cultural heritage and promoting peace and understanding.

During her visit, Jill Biden will tour the historic venue of Mont-Saint-Michel, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its picturesque beauty. She will also pay her respects to U.S. service members at the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial.

In addition to these engagements, the First Lady will meet with Brigitte Macron, the wife of French President Emmanuel Macron. This meeting signifies the importance placed on diplomatic relationships between the two nations.

The U.S.’s decision to rejoin UNESCO comes after the country’s withdrawal in 2018 under the previous administration of Donald Trump. Concerns about China’s influence within the organization played a role in the U.S.’s decision to reclaim its membership.

To support its commitment to UNESCO, the U.S. has requested $150 million in the 2024 budget to cover dues and arrears. This financial backing demonstrates the country’s dedication to promoting global collaboration and strengthening international organizations.

Jill Biden’s trip to Paris is part of her ongoing efforts to promote key initiatives of the Biden administration. This visit marks her fourth solo international trip this year, following visits to Namibia, Kenya, London, Jordan, Egypt, Morocco, and Portugal.

In addition to her diplomatic engagements, Jill Biden has also taken on a role in supporting her husband’s presidential reelection campaign. Recently, she headlined fundraisers to garner support for the campaign.

As Jill Biden continues her trip to Paris, her presence highlights the importance of strengthening global partnerships and restoring American leadership within international organizations.
