In a recent move to retain top talent in the artificial intelligence (AI) field, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has announced that the company will be giving its AI engineers a raise. This decision comes after Musk confirmed that Tesla’s machine-learning scientist, Ethan Knight, left for Musk’s own AI startup, xAI, after being recruited by rival firm OpenAI.
According to Musk, OpenAI has been aggressively poaching Tesla engineers with “massive compensation offers”, leading to a talent war for AI expertise. Describing it as the craziest he has ever seen, Musk stated that Tesla is now raising compensation for its AI engineering team to prevent further losses.
OpenAI, known as a leader in generative AI, has seen success with its ChatGPT chatbot, which has become the fastest-growing software application in the world. The company has been backed by major investor Microsoft, a competitor in the AI space that has launched its own bots in response to ChatGPT.
Despite layoffs in other areas of tech companies, the demand for AI engineers remains high. Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015 but left the board in 2018, is currently suing the company and its CEO, Sam Altman, for breaching their founding agreement. In response, Musk launched xAI as an alternative to OpenAI and Google bots, with the goal of creating a “maximum truth-seeking AI”.
As the competition for AI talent continues to intensify, companies like Tesla and OpenAI are ramping up efforts to attract and retain top engineers in the field. Stay tuned for more developments in this rapidly evolving industry.
