The Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport is gearing up for normal operations on April 8, with a total of 42 departures and arrivals expected on that day. Despite the anticipated air traffic, airport personnel are fully prepared to ensure safety during a unique event happening that day—the solar eclipse.
Four arrivals are scheduled between 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., with none expected to be in the air during the peak of the eclipse at 3:20 p.m. Airport personnel, including air traffic controllers, firefighters, and maintenance staff, are on standby to manage potential challenges related to the eclipse, such as changes in lighting conditions.
Although it is challenging to determine if the eclipse has influenced a higher volume of people flying into the region, the timing of the astronomical event coincides with one of the busiest flying weeks of the year. Airport Director Andy Moore suggests that travelers arriving or departing on April 8 should plan ahead by arriving early and bringing proper eye protection, such as eclipse glasses.
For those interested in witnessing the eclipse while at the airport, Moore recommends heading to the top of the parking garage or airport lots for an unobstructed view. With safety and efficiency in mind, the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport is poised to accommodate travelers during this extraordinary celestial event.
