Palworld’s Creator Stays True to Small Studio Roots
Takuro Mizobe, the creator of the popular monster-taming survival game Palworld, is determined to keep his development studio, Pocketpair, small and focused on creating multiple small games rather than big-budget triple-A titles. Despite Palworld’s massive success, with over two million Steam players logged in at the same time, rivaling big hits on the platform, Mizobe insists that the team won’t significantly expand.
Reportedly costing around one billion yen to develop, Palworld has brought in several billions of yen in profit. However, Mizobe believes that the game’s success may be too much for their small studio to handle. Despite this, Pocketpair has the financial freedom to work on whatever projects they desire in the future, thanks to the revenue generated by Palworld.
Mizobe values multiplayer modes in games and believes they are crucial in the current gaming era. PvP and a Pal versus Pal Arena are heavily emphasized in Palworld’s content roadmap, catering to the preferences of the game’s dedicated fan base. Additionally, a DS-style Palworld demake inspired by Pokemon Black and Zelda games has been teased, adding further excitement for players.
Despite successful partnerships, such as launching on Game Pass with Microsoft, Pocketpair has no intentions of becoming a publicly traded company or being acquired. The studio’s focus remains on creating unique and engaging gaming experiences for their players, maintaining their independence and creative freedom.
As Palworld continues to captivate audiences around the world, Mizobe’s commitment to quality over quantity in game development ensures that Pocketpair remains a standout within the industry.
