Apple is making waves in the tech world once again with its upcoming mixed-reality headset, the Vision Pro. Set to launch in March 2024, this highly anticipated device comes with a hefty price tag of $3,500. However, reports suggest that Apple’s next-generation headset, which is expected to hit the market in 2027, could offer even more exciting features.
One of the key improvements in the next-generation Vision Pro is the screen. The current version utilizes a MicroOLED screen with a white backlight and color filter. However, the future headset could come equipped with an RGB OLEDoS (OLED on Silicon) screen. This particular type of screen eliminates light loss that occurs when passing through a color filter, resulting in brighter visuals and enhanced color luminance.
While the production capacity for MicroOLED panels with color filters is currently low, there is a glimmer of hope. The US-based company eMagin produces RGB OLEDoS panels for military use. Interestingly, Samsung Display recently acquired eMagin, which is expected to boost production capacities. This acquisition could potentially open doors for eMagin to supply panels for Apple’s next-generation headset.
As for the current Vision Pro, it features a 1.42-inch OLEDoS screen with an impressive resolution of 3,648 x 3,144 pixels (11.47MP). With a pixel density of 3,391ppi, users can expect a crystal-clear and immersive viewing experience. Additionally, the outer screen on the headset utilizes an OLED panel from LG Display, boasting a resolution of 800 x 360 pixels and a pixel density of 145ppi.
The advancements in Apple’s mixed-reality headset technology are incredibly exciting. With the March 2024 release of the Vision Pro and the potential for an even better next-generation model in 2027, Apple continues to push the boundaries of innovation in the tech industry. As production capacities for advanced screens increase, consumers can anticipate an even more immersive and visually stunning mixed-reality experience from Apple’s future headsets.
