Minnesota Unveils New Flag Design to Replace Previous Controversial Design
Minnesota has introduced a brand new flag design aimed at rectifying the offensive imagery associated with the previous one, which was deemed offensive to Native Americans. The new flag, approved by Minnesota’s State Emblems Redesign Commission, features a white eight-pointed star on a dark blue background in the shape of the state. This star represents Minnesota’s motto, the Star of the North. In addition, the light blue color incorporated in the flag represents the state’s abundant waters.
The decision to change the flag came after an 11-1 vote by the commission to address concerns about the previous design. It was acknowledged by the commission’s chairman that the new flag could be open to different interpretations and perceptions by individuals.
The creator of this new design is Andrew Prekker, a talented 24-year-old artist from Minnesota. Prekker expressed his gratitude and excitement at the opportunity to leave his mark on the state’s history by contributing to the design of the new flag.
Alongside the new flag, the State Emblems Redesign Commission also approved a new state seal featuring the loon, Minnesota’s state bird. This comprehensive redesign aims to portray a more inclusive and culturally-sensitive representation of the state.
The proposed flag is set to be officially adopted on May 11, Minnesota’s Statehood Day. However, its approval by the state legislature is still pending.
The existing flag, in use since 1957, has been a subject of debate for several years due to the imagery it portrays. The current design features a horse-mounted Native American moving away from a farmer with a plough and rifle. Some commission members argue that this depiction alludes to the displacement of Native Americans in Minnesota.
Minnesota’s decision to change its flag follows a trend among other states in the United States, such as Mississippi, who have also redesigned their flags to remove offensive symbols. Comparisons have been drawn between Minnesota’s new flag and the flag of Puntland, a Somali state. However, officials have clarified that this resemblance is purely coincidental.
With the introduction of the new flag, Minnesota hopes to foster a sense of unity and respect for all its residents while also honoring its rich history and natural beauty.
