In a recent development in the ongoing conflict in Yemen, the U.S. military and its allies have successfully intercepted and shot down 28 drones launched by Houthi militants in the Red Sea. Despite the intensity of the assault, there have been no reports of commercial or naval vessels being damaged in the attacks.
According to U.K. Defense Secretary Grant Shapps, a British warship was involved in shooting down some of the Houthi drones. The Houthi militants have been targeting ships in the Red Sea since November, in solidarity with Hamas in its conflict with Israel. The attacks escalated when the commercial ship True Confidence was hit, resulting in the tragic deaths of at least three crew members.
In a separate incident, a British-owned ship was struck by a Houthi missile in February, causing it to sink in the Red Sea. This attack also severed three undersea telecommunication cables, disrupting communication networks in the region.
In response to the escalating violence, the U.S. and U.K., along with coalition forces, launched four rounds of airstrikes on Houthi military targets in Yemen. The Biden administration also recently designated the Houthi militants as a “specially designated global terrorist group,” reversing a previous decision made by the State Department.
The situation in Yemen remains volatile as the conflict between Houthi militants and coalition forces continues to escalate. The international community is closely monitoring the situation in hopes of finding a peaceful resolution to the ongoing violence.
