Tragedy struck Chicago’s South Side last night as an 8-year-old girl was fatally shot and 10 others were injured in what is believed to be a gang-related incident. The shooting occurred near 52nd St. and South Damen Ave. at 9:18 p.m., where victims ranging in age from 19 to 40 were standing outside at a family gathering.
The 8-year-old girl, who was shot in the head, tragically lost her life, while two boys were critically injured. Responding police officers quickly applied tourniquets and chest seals to aid in the response efforts before all victims were taken to local hospitals by the Chicago Fire Department.
A witness reported seeing a black sedan approach the scene and fire shots into the crowd before fleeing the scene. Deputy Police Chief Don Jerome stated that the incident was likely gang-related and Area One detectives are currently investigating the shooting. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the case.
The community is devastated by the senseless violence that claimed the life of an innocent child and left multiple others injured. Mayor Lori Lightfoot expressed her condolences to the victims and their families and called for an end to the cycle of violence plaguing the city’s streets.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward and help bring those responsible to justice. This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to address the issue of gun violence in Chicago and work towards creating safer communities for all residents.
