Boston Celtics secure Jrue Holiday with lucrative contract extension
In a move that solidifies their roster for the foreseeable future, the Boston Celtics have signed veteran guard Jrue Holiday to a four-year, $135 million contract extension. This deal comes after Holiday declined a $37.3 million player option for the 2024-25 season, opting instead for long-term security with the Celtics.
Holiday, who was traded to Boston from the Portland Trail Blazers earlier this season, has quickly become a key contributor to the team. Despite posting his lowest scoring output since his rookie year, Holiday is averaging 12.5 points, 5.4 rebounds, 4.9 assists, and 0.9 steals per game while playing a crucial role in the Celtics’ stout defense, which ranks second in the NBA.
The 31-year-old guard is now one of just four players at his age or older to sign a guaranteed deal worth more than $100 million. Holiday has previously played for the Philadelphia 76ers, New Orleans Pelicans, and Milwaukee Bucks before finding a home in Boston.
With a league-leading record of 62-17, the Celtics are poised for a deep playoff run. President of basketball operations Brad Stevens and co-owner Stephen Pagliuca have both expressed their desire to keep Holiday as a core member of the team for years to come, recognizing his impact both on and off the court.
As the regular season winds down and the playoffs approach, Celtics fans can rest assured that Holiday will be a key piece of their team’s championship aspirations in the years ahead.
