Google CEO Sundar Pichai has announced a major reorganization within the tech giant, detailing the merging of the Android, Chrome, and Pixel divisions. The new Platforms & Devices division aims to formalize collaboration between the Development, Security, Privacy & Assurance (DSPA) and Platforms & Ecosystems (P&E) teams.
The merger is expected to lead to the creation of higher quality products and experiences for users and partners. The goal is to drive computing forward at the intersection of hardware, software, and artificial intelligence.
This reorganization comes after the hardware division switched to a functional organization model earlier this year. Additionally, all compute-intensive model building within Alphabet/Google will now take place in Google DeepMind.
Responsibility for AI teams will also be shifting, with teams moving from Research to DeepMind to be closer to model building. Launch requirements for AI-powered features will be standardized, and there will be increased investment in red team testing for vulnerabilities.
Moving forward, Google Research will focus on computing systems, foundational machine learning and algorithms, applied science, and society. Pichai emphasized the company’s mission to provide objective and trusted information for all users globally.
Overall, the reorganization aims to streamline operations and improve the quality of products and services offered by Google. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development.
