Former Police Officer Derek Chauvin Attacked in Arizona Prison: Inmate Charged with Attempted Murder
Former police officer Derek Chauvin, who gained worldwide attention for his role in the killing of George Floyd, was attacked by an inmate while serving his sentence in an Arizona prison. The incident occurred at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson.
According to reports, inmate John Turscak approached Chauvin in the law library and stabbed him approximately 22 times using an improvised knife. Quick response from federal corrections officers led to Turscak being subdued with the use of OC spray.
Turscak has been charged with attempted murder, assault with intent to commit murder, assault with a dangerous weapon, and assault resulting in serious bodily injury. During questioning, Turscak claimed that the attack was symbolic in relation to the Black Lives Matter movement and the Mexican Mafia’s “Black Hand” symbol.
If convicted, Turscak could face a maximum of 20 years’ incarceration for attempted murder and assault with intent to commit murder, while assault with a dangerous weapon and assault resulting in serious bodily injury carry a maximum penalty of 10 years’ incarceration.
Chauvin, who is currently serving sentences for Floyd’s murder on both state and federal charges, has become a symbol of the systemic issues of racial injustice and police treatment of people of color. Floyd’s tragic death sparked nationwide protests and ignited a global conversation on these pressing issues.
In light of this incident, it is essential to note that an investigation had previously revealed a pattern of race discrimination within the city and its police department where Chauvin served. This incident further emphasizes the need for comprehensive reform and accountability measures within law enforcement agencies.
CNN has reached out to Chauvin’s attorney for a comment on the matter, but no response has been received at the time of writing this article.
As developments continue to unfold, it is crucial to address the systemic issues surrounding racial injustice and work towards creating a more inclusive and just society for all.
