Former White House staffer Gabe Amo has emerged as the winner of the Democratic nomination for Rhode Island’s 1st Congressional District. Amo, who previously worked in the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs under the Obama and Biden administrations, was able to secure a victory over several other prominent candidates.
During the primary election, Amo faced tough competition from former state Rep. Aaron Regunberg, State Sen. Sandra Cano, and Lt. Gov. Sabina Matos. However, Amo managed to take the lead, with Regunberg coming in second place and Cano and Matos trailing behind.
Amo’s watch party was a star-studded affair, with appearances from Congressman Seth Magaziner, Secretary of State Gregg Amore, and Cano. The support from these influential figures undoubtedly boosted Amo’s campaign and solidified his position as the frontrunner.
If elected in the special election scheduled for November, Amo will make history as the first person of color elected to Congress in Rhode Island. This significant achievement would mark a major milestone in the state’s political landscape.
The special election was called to fill the vacant seat left by David Cicilline, who announced his resignation to become the CEO of the Rhode Island Foundation. This off-year special election drew intense interest, with a total of 11 Democrats vying for the nomination.
At the beginning of the primary race, Matos seemed to be the frontrunner. However, her campaign was marred by a scandal involving fraudulent signatures on nomination papers. This setback allowed candidates like Regunberg and Amo to gain momentum and attract more support from progressive voters.
Moving forward, Amo will face Republican Gerry Leonard in the special election on November 7. However, Democrats are strongly favored to win in the 1st District, as the district has not elected a Republican representative since 1992.
Despite their competition during the primary race, Regunberg has expressed his willingness to work with Amo to help him secure a seat in Congress. This collaboration between two prominent Democratic figures shows a commitment to party unity and a shared objective of furthering their party’s agenda.
As the November election approaches, all eyes will be on Gabe Amo and his campaign for Rhode Island’s 1st Congressional District. If successful, Amo’s victory would not only be a personal triumph but also a significant step towards a more diverse and inclusive political landscape in the state.
