Title: Former Proud Boys Leader Sentenced to 22 Years for Role in US Capitol Attack
On Friday, former leader of the neo-fascist Proud Boys gang, Enrique Tarrio, received a sentence of 22 years in prison on treason-related charges. Tarrio, along with three other members of the group, was found guilty of seditious conspiracy and other crimes related to their involvement in the January 6 attack on the US Capitol.
During the trial, it was revealed that Tarrio had organized and directed a mob towards the Capitol, where the Proud Boys dismantled barricades and broke windows to breach the halls of Congress. Federal prosecutors described Tarrio as a charismatic leader and savvy propagandist, who used his influence to promote political violence.
US District Judge Timothy Kelly characterized Tarrio as the ultimate leader of the conspiracy, imposing the largest prison sentence to date among Capitol attack cases. Four other members of the Proud Boys gang have also been sentenced for their roles in the attack.
Notably, Tarrio’s verdict marked the first successful seditious conspiracy conviction against a January 6 defendant who was not physically present at the Capitol that day. Prosecutors presented hundreds of internal messages during the trial, highlighting the group’s culture of violence and the preparations made for the attack.
According to the prosecutors, the Proud Boys were not solely following former President Donald Trump’s commands; they were also preparing for all-out war to undermine the election results. Tarrio’s apology for the national embarrassment of January 6 came alongside his expressed intention to distance himself from politics and activism in the future.
During the sentencing hearing, Tarrio’s co-defendant, Dominic Pezzola, shouted “Trump won,” showcasing the group’s continued belief in Trump’s support. It is worth noting that Tarrio was also responsible for burning a church’s sign in December 2020 and was found carrying two high-capacity magazines during his arrest in January 2021.
Prosecutors argued that Tarrio deliberately orchestrated his arrest to inspire a reaction from his followers and incite further political violence. His influence extends beyond the Capitol attack, as he has encouraged Proud Boys members to become more involved in local politics.
These actions have not gone unnoticed, as the Proud Boys have engaged in harassment and attacks against drag queen events, as well as spreading harmful propaganda aimed at the LGBT+ community.
With Tarrio’s prison sentence, justice has been served for his role in the US Capitol attack. The conviction sends a strong message that individuals who incite and engage in violence for political purposes will face severe consequences.
