In a recent announcement, Poland’s President Andrzej Duda revealed that Russia has commenced the movement of short-range nuclear weapons to neighboring Belarus. Duda emphasized that this action will not only impact the security architecture of the region but also the entire NATO military alliance.
The confirmation follows an earlier announcement made by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, stating that Moscow had already shipped tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus. However, the United States and NATO have not yet verified this development.
Reacting to the news, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg condemned Moscow’s rhetoric as “dangerous and reckless.” However, he maintained that there has not been any observed change in Russia’s nuclear posture thus far.
Tactical nuclear weapons, unlike their more powerful counterparts, are designed for battlefield use with a shorter range and lower yield. Both Moscow and Minsk have suggested that these warheads could be delivered by Belarusian Su-25 ground attack jets or fitted onto short-range Iskander missiles.
President Duda made this startling revelation during a joint news conference with Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. Duda emphasized how the situation significantly affects Poland and the eastern flank of NATO.
In response, Lukashenko claimed that hosting Russian nuclear weapons in Belarus is a precautionary measure against any potential aggression from NATO member Poland. However, Poland has not made any threats of aggression towards its neighbors.
During the conference, President Duda also discussed the recent US State Department approval for the potential sale of 96 Boeing AH-64E Apache helicopters to Poland, showcasing the country’s commitment to strengthening its defense capabilities.
President Rebelo de Sousa pledged continued support for Ukraine and other countries in the region. He highlighted that the situation on Europe’s eastern borders is of utmost importance to Portugal.
Both Duda and Rebelo de Sousa expressed solidarity and vigilance in response to these potential threats, emphasizing the need for increased security measures and cooperative efforts within NATO.
