Clarence Avant, widely known as the “Godfather of Black Music,” has sadly passed away at the age of 92 at his Los Angeles residence. Avant’s remarkable career spanned various roles including artist manager, executive, mentor, and record label owner. He collaborated with an extensive roster of renowned artists such as Sarah Vaughan, Freddie Hubbard, Little Willie John, and Bill Withers, leaving an indelible mark on the industry.
One of Avant’s notable achievements was the founding of KAGB-FM, which became one of the pioneering Black-owned radio stations in the United States. Additionally, he established the Sussex and Tabu record companies, playing a pivotal role in shaping the careers of many musicians. Avant’s influential support also contributed to the success of the songwriting and production duo Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, as well as industry figures L.A. Reid and Babyface.
Avant’s impact extended beyond the music world. He served as the promoter for Michael Jackson’s iconic “Bad” tour and broke barriers by being the first African-American to join the International Management Board for PolyGram. His close friendship with Quincy Jones and mentorship of notable industry figures like L.A. Reid and Jon Platt further solidified his status as a revered personality in the entertainment business.
Throughout his life, Avant received numerous accolades for his contributions. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he also received prestigious honors, including the Grammy Salute to Industry Icons. Avant’s influence went beyond entertainment; he had relationships with prominent figures in the political, social, and sporting arenas, including Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, Oprah Winfrey, and Muhammad Ali.
Avant’s extraordinary life and career gained even more recognition through the release of the Netflix documentary “The Black Godfather,” which shed light on his groundbreaking journey. On a personal note, he married Jacqueline Gray in 1967, and their children Nicole Avant and Alex Avant have also made their mark in the entertainment industry.
Tragedy struck the Avant family in 2021 when Jacqueline Avant was fatally shot during a burglary attempt at their home. She had been tirelessly working on the Jacqueline Avant Children & Family Center in South Los Angeles, further exemplifying the family’s commitment to philanthropy and community development.
Clarence Avant’s passing marks the end of an era in the music industry. His remarkable achievements, mentoring, and advocacy will forever be remembered as an inspiration for future generations.
