Escape from Tarkov developer Battlestate faces controversy over exclusive PvE mode
Battlestate, the developer of the popular game Escape from Tarkov, recently came under fire for locking an exclusive Player vs Environment (PvE) mode behind a €300 Unheard Edition. This move initially sparked backlash from the gaming community, as the PvE mode was not considered a downloadable content (DLC), raising questions about promises made to Edge of Darkness edition owners.
In response to the criticism, Battlestate clarified that the PvE mode required separate network infrastructure and resources, which led to the decision to eventually make it available to all Edge of Darkness edition owners at the release of the game. However, players who do not upgrade to the Unheard Edition can still try the PvE mode during early access by paying a fee.
To appease disgruntled fans, the team offered a 50% discount for upgrading to the Unheard Edition and a 70% discount for early access to the PvE mode for Edge of Darkness edition owners. Despite these updates, some players remain dissatisfied and continue to challenge Battlestate’s assertion that the new mode is not considered DLC.
The controversy surrounding the PvE mode in Escape from Tarkov highlights the challenges developers face when it comes to introducing new features and content in games. As the situation continues to unravel, it will be interesting to see how Battlestate navigates the delicate balance between meeting player expectations and maintaining their vision for the game.
