In recent weeks, pro-Palestinian protests at colleges and universities across the country have escalated, resulting in over 500 arrests. Demonstrators are demanding an end to the conflict between Israel and Hamas, as well as urging their schools to sever business ties with Israel.
At Columbia University, more than 100 people were arrested as police moved in to clear out an encampment. Negotiations with student protesters are ongoing as tensions remain high on campus. Similarly, the University of Southern California experienced 93 arrests for trespassing, including one for assault with a deadly weapon, leading to the cancellation of the commencement ceremony.
The University of Texas at Austin saw nearly 60 arrests for loitering, sparking calls for the resignation of the school’s president. Emerson College in Boston also faced over 100 arrests after police dismantled an encampment, resulting in the addition of a location to the list of restricted demonstration areas on campus.
In addition to these incidents, arrests were reported at Princeton University, Emory University, The Ohio State University, and the University of Minnesota, among others.
