Qualcomm Unveils New Snapdragon X Plus Chip for Mainstream Laptops
Qualcomm has recently announced the release of its latest laptop processor, the Snapdragon X Plus chip, expanding its lineup of processors for portable computers. The X Plus is built on the same 4nm process and Arm-based Oryon CPU architecture as its predecessor, the X Elite.
This new chip is primarily geared towards more affordable mainstream laptops, offering 10 CPU cores and reduced clock speeds compared to the X Elite. Qualcomm claims that the X Plus boasts an impressive 45 TOPS of machine learning performance and is expected to deliver a 37 percent improvement in CPU performance compared to Intel’s Core Ultra 7 155H.
Additionally, Qualcomm has stated that the X Plus is set to outperform Apple’s M3 processor by 10 percent in multi-threaded CPU tasks. The chip is expected to hit the market in the second half of 2024, with early benchmarks on reference devices showing promising performance.
However, there may be compatibility challenges with Windows for Arm-based silicon, similar to the transition Apple faced with its macOS. Real-world testing will be crucial in determining the true capabilities of the X Plus once it is integrated into retail devices.
Overall, the release of the Snapdragon X Plus chip marks a significant advancement in Qualcomm’s laptop processor offerings, and it will be interesting to see how it performs against competitors once it hits the market.
