The U.S. Military Sets Sail to Build Floating Pier for Aid Delivery in Gaza
In a move aimed at delivering crucial aid to the residents of Gaza, the U.S. military has set sail with equipment to construct a floating pier on the coast of the region. This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Biden administration to provide assistance to Gaza by sea.
The plan for the pier and causeway is expected to eventually facilitate the delivery of up to two million meals per day to the people of Gaza. However, the construction of the pier is a complex process that will likely take several weeks to complete.
The Army ship General Frank S. Besson departed from Norfolk, Va., on Sunday, carrying the necessary equipment to establish a temporary pier for delivering humanitarian supplies. The Army’s Seventh Transportation Brigade (Expeditionary) will be responsible for constructing the floating pier, with approximately 1,000 American service members participating in the project.
The Israeli military will collaborate with the U.S. Army to coordinate the installation of the pier and inspect shipments before transferring them to aid organizations for distribution. This joint effort is crucial as warnings of an impending famine in Gaza continue to escalate.
Several other countries and organizations, including Britain, the European Union, and the United Arab Emirates, are also engaged in maritime initiatives to deliver aid to Gaza. World Central Kitchen, headed by renowned chef José Andrés, is loading a cargo ship in Cyprus with food supplies destined for Gaza. Additionally, the Spanish aid group Open Arms, in partnership with the United Arab Emirates, is coordinating the first sea shipment of food and humanitarian supplies to Gaza.
Despite the logistical challenges and significant costs associated with delivering aid to Gaza by sea, officials believe that this method is essential to alleviate the hunger crisis in the region. The joint efforts of various countries and organizations signify a unified commitment to providing much-needed assistance to the people of Gaza during these challenging times.
