NASA’s Psyche mission has reached a significant milestone in space exploration by successfully demonstrating the most distant use of laser communications. This achievement is part of the Deep Space Optical Communications technology demonstration (DSOC) that is being conducted onboard the Psyche spacecraft.
The DSOC experiment aims to test high-bandwidth laser communications by utilizing an invisible near-infrared laser to send and receive data with Earth. Recently, the experiment achieved a breakthrough with its “first light” moment, successfully transmitting and receiving data from a distance of nearly 10 million miles. To put this in perspective, it is approximately 40 times farther than the distance between the moon and Earth.
This triumph holds immense potential for advancing communication technology for future human exploration of Mars. It marks the first time that laser communications have been successfully employed for deep space transmissions, a feat that requires unparalleled precision in aiming and pointing the laser over millions of miles.

Although DSOC won’t transmit scientific data collected by the Psyche spacecraft, it will demonstrate the ability to send test data encoded in the laser’s photons. This breakthrough could potentially revolutionize the way NASA sends and receives data from deep space missions.
The DSOC team will closely monitor the time taken for laser messages to travel across space as the distance between the spacecraft and Earth increases. This valuable data will contribute to ongoing research and development efforts in laser communication technology.
Meanwhile, the Psyche spacecraft is actively preparing for its primary mission, which involves studying an asteroid upon its arrival in July 2029. By analyzing this asteroid, scientists hope to gain valuable insights into the origins of the solar system.
