Houses and cars under water, overflowing canals and streams, as well as a sinkhole on the Mazatlan-Culiacán highway, were the most visible damages caused by the rains that fell in the city on Thursday morning.

Continuous rainfall for more than 10 hours caused havoc in about 22 colonias, including Jacarandas, Expansion November 20, Lico Velarde, Villas del Estero, Insurgentes, El Toreo and López Mateos, where dozens of people were evacuated and moved to safer grounds. According to the latest Conagua report, Mazatlan had an accumulated 245 millimeters of rainfall, which lasted until 3:00am this morning.

Óscar Osuna Tirado, Director of Civil Protection in the southern part of the state, said that the rainfall recorded on Thursday may be one of the largest that Mazatlan has had in the last five years. And although the damage was not so severe, it did require a strong deployment of security personnel to safeguard Mazatlecos and tourists.

In Centro the water reached up to 40 centimeters high inside some homes. The same happened in colonias such as López Mateos, Jacarandas and El Toreo subdivisions, where the water level rose considerably.

In the Insurgentes neighborhood, several families were evacuated from their homes and taken to the temporary shelter located in the Lions Club, or to other places where they could be safe.

Additionally, staff of the Tourist Assistance and Protection Center temporarily sheltered four visitors from Querétaro, who were stranded during the rains in the hotel zone. The heavy rainfall also caused a sinkhole on the Mazatlan-Culiacán highway, which restricted traffic to just the northbound lane.

The head of Civil Protection in the southern zone indicated that the most serious flood effects were in La Marina Avenue, Gran Plaza, Toreo, Juárez, Jacarandas, overpass to south exit, among others.
