One of Mazatlan’s beaches will be converted to accommodate disabled users. It will have adequate parking, and specialized personnel and equipment that will help the disabled to access the beach..

With an initial budget of just under $12 million pesos, the beach areas of Playa Norte, Pinitos, or Isla de la Piedra will be adapted for the disabled according to the director of DIF Mazatlan, Roberto Rodríguez Lizárraga.

He said that the project could not be completed this year because it wasn’t budgeted for and several permits from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) were required. He explained that an Accessible beach has the functionality for a person with disabilities to move with the help of a professional, or a physiotherapist, to get to the beach with special flotation devices, which are very expensive and are not currently available in Mexico.

¨It´s a project that requires a lot of space, but mainly a lot of investment because the staffing has to be available for almost 24 hours, and parking lots have to be modified¨

He said that of the three options available, the beach that would require the least investment is the one located in Playa Norte

Rodríguez Lizárraga said that it is expected that both the state and Federal governments will fund this project with additional support, since it will help market Mazatlan, as an Inclusive city.
