Plastic waste from more than 10 years ago found at Gaviotas Beach
About 150 volunteers showed up to clean the Gaviotas beach in an operation organized by Operadora Playas, to commemorate Oceans Day.
Among the junk collected were plastic bags of chips and candies from the 80’s and 90’s. The kind of bags from brands Sabritas and Ricolino, have been around for 30 years or so. Similarly soft drinks bottles that were more than 20 years old were found.
A group of volunteers who was cleaning a lot between the Emporio and Ramada Hotels saw a glass bottle that was buried in the sand, they started digging and found a plywood piece and bellow it were the old plastic bags that were buried at least 80 centimeters deep.
At the end of the project, 6,375 cigarette butts, 735 plastic caps and 480 kilos of garbage were recovered and removed.
