The first “garbage catchers” are getting ready
Prior to Holy Week, Engineer Sofia Trejo, went viral with a tweet suggesting that large containers be placed in the main thoroughfares of Mazatlan, where empty plastic bottles could be collected. Businessmen, the Authorities, and residents supported the idea that became very successful.
Also deposited in the containers were plastic beach toys in the shape of sharks, snails, and fish at access points to the beaches.
Now, Sofia is pushing for at least 2 garbage “catchers” at the Puente Juarez (Juarez Bridge).
These “catchers” will form a trap for the garbage entering Jabalines Creek and the Infiernillo estuary before the plastics and other material end up the ocean.
They will be made of recyclable materials such as plastic bottles and nets donated by fishermen. The first prototype has already been tested and the plan is to have them ready before the rainy season starts.
