Shazam – Film Review

The latest offering in the DC universe is a fun superhero romp with a difference. Young Billy Bateson (Asher Angel) got separated from his mum at the local fair when he was a tot and has constantly run away from the foster families he has been placed with ever since, whilst all the time trying to find his long lost mother.

Billy’s latest placement is with the Vasquez’s who were both foster kids themselves so understand Billy’s angst more than others. The household is made up of a slew of other foster kids, one of which, Freddy (Jack Dylan Grazer), is a superhero nerd, which comes in useful on more than one occasion.

The first twenty minutes or so of the film develops Billy’s character and feels like a serious drama until we meet Shazam when the humour starts to appear. While here, Billy transforms into Shazam for the first time (Zachary Levi) after being chosen by an ageing wizard (Djimon Hounsou) to carry mankind’s hopes in battling evil. This gives him and us, the audience plenty of fun discovering what he can and cannot do.

All good superheroes need a nemesis and Shazam’s is Dr. Sivana superbly portrayed by the ever-reliable Mark Strong who has the seven deadly sins as his allies. The effects for greed, gluttony, wrath and the rest of their amigos were excellent and added to the atmosphere.

One of the strengths of the film, is that not only is Billy’s backstory explored in some depth but so is Dr. Sivana’s and we see how his childhood and family shaped his menacing future.

In summary, a film that anybody who has felt themselves on the outside looking in could identify with, which director David F. Sandberg keeps moving at a decent pace with plenty of laughs.

Mark Strong has a shout for this week’s star of the show but is beaten by Zachary Levi who as Shazam is often is as amazed by his powers as those watching. I am already looking forward to the sequel that is bound to come.

7.5 out of 10.
