Baby dolphin “Esperanza” dies at the Aquarium

After three months of dedicated care, sadly the dolphin “Esperanza” (“Hope”) died of a cardiac arrest on Monday, announced Pablo Rojas, Director of the Mazatlan Aquarium.

She died despite the hopeful expectations from experts who looked after her 24/7. They even planned to relocate her but sadly the baby dolphin didn’t survive.

The Director said that autopsy results revealed an intestinal obstruction, and it was determined that this was the cause of death.

Esperanza was rescued on October 24 last year on the Cerritos beach after Hurricane Willa but she was in poor condition and there was little expectation of her recovery.

However, her health kept improving in the last three months, during which she gained 10 kilos and improved her swimming skills.

“We are very sad for her loss, but having her here also allowed us to learn a lot about rescuing these animals,” said the Aquarium Director.
