Stone laying ceremony of Mazatlan’s new aquarium.

Federal Secretary of Tourism, Miguel A. Torruco,  laid the foundation of the new Mazatlan Aquarium which will cost $1.4 billion pesos via  a Public/Private partnership.

“The Sea of Cortez Aquarium” will be fundamental to recovering the spot as a touristic destination that Mazatlan had during the 60’s and 70’s ” said Mayor Guillermo Benitez at the Ceremony.

Miguel A. Torruco said that Mazatlan is a very important tourism destination that has the 8th spot of foreign tourist arrivals and the 4th place of cruise ship passenger arrivals in the Pacific  Ocean.

” The new aquarium will be a leading attraction for Sinaloa that will bring more visitors and longer stays”, he added.

Jose Luis Mogollon, President of Operadora Audax and Kenwood Mexicana, investor of the project ratified the commitment of donating part of the ticket revenue to Municipal institutions, and contribute to the maintenance of Central Park in addition to a permanent program of 800 free visits a month for kids from families with limited economic resources.

The construction will take about 24 months.  Half of the investment will be provided by Federal resources and the other half from the private sector.

The new Aquarium will be at least 2.5 times bigger than the current one. The building will have 3 stories and the top floor will overlook Central Park.
