We’re looking for candidates to burn (Bad Mood Fest)!
Carnaval organizers are looking for nominations of someone who “deserve to be burned” as part of the celebrations during the festival on Saturday, March 2nd.
Every year during the Carnaval, Mazatlecos have fun and forget about any trouble and to start the celebrations they have the traditional “Burning of the Bad Mood”
According to historian, Enrique Vega, the tradition started in 1904 burning for first-time a figure representing the bubonic plague, a deadly disease that affected Mazatlan so badly that Carnaval was not celebrated in 1903.
In the old days, the Carnaval’ King was the main character, the winner was elected by their oratory and comedic skills and he gave speeches mocking the authority and society. But in 1900 after the election of the first Carnival Queen, the King character became more as a companion. The “Burning of Bad Mood” was created to keep the irony and sarcasm of the Carnaval.
The character election varies depending on the political, economic and social framework of every year. During the second war, Hitler was elected and in 2016 it was Donald Trump. They are not always politicians, sometimes they are also celebrities like Lucero singer, Platanito clown or CFE (electricity company), Mexican peso among others.
If you have a candidate let know the organizers who and why here
