The Jamaican Pastry is finely ground beef covered empanada style with a dough seasoned with curry.
Every once in a while one harvests a real jewel…no, this isn’t of the diamond or emerald variety but just as precious for satisfying a voracious appetite.
Surf’s Up is just such a jewel and it is with great reluctance that I share its wonderful attributes with the readership of The Mazatlan Messenger. Of course I realize that sharing a secret rendezvous gives one such pleasure and is so rewarding that deep down I know this great satisfaction will endure.
Surf’s Up is about a twenty minute drive from the Golden Zone. It is located in Nuevo Mazatlán Cerritos so you must drive towards Cerritos and past Puebla Bonito Emerald Bay Hotel and La Jola Boutique Resort and approximately a half kilometer on your left your gourmet meal awaits.

The restaurant provides tables on the beach, the veranda or inside the restaurant .
My wife and I were there for a late lunch. We were greeted by Leanne the designer, the operator and the chef all rolled into one. The view is outstanding as from the entrance on you are aware of the azure surf that awaits your enjoyment. There is seating inside the warm atmosphere of the restaurant itself, on its veranda or tables sitting in the sandy beach.
On this occasion there had to be a thousand pelicans floating, flying, and diving during a fish feeding frenzy beneath the surface of the churning sea. It captures your imagination and you just know that Captain Horatio Hornblower had witnessed similar scenes eons ago and it is your pleasure to be a part of this imaginary history.
The menu itself is thought provoking for the titles of each dish challenges one to interpret whether it is derived from a song title or from a tiny bit of history perhaps only familiar to its creator Leanne. The nice part is that she is more than happy to enlighten you and the explanation once heard makes you wonder why you didn’t fathom its derivation in the first instance.

On the menu is "Something Crazy" a multi-layered panini with pesto, Gouda cheese, goat cheese and tomatoes, including soup of the day.
My wife chose “Something Crazy” which was a panini seared bread with pesto, Gouda cheese, goat cheese and tomatoes, accompanied by a choice of soup, salad or potato wedges. That day´s soup was a combination of paella rice, corn, green and orange bell peppers, cilantro and tons of chicken.
I chose the Jamaican Beef Pastry with a red leaf lettuce salad dressed with sliced almonds, dried cranberries, bell peppers, and her ginger honey dressing that was fabulous. The Jamaican Pastry was finely ground beef covered empanada style with a dough seasoned with curry. While I thought slightly dry at first this was quickly remedied by a smidgen of a fantastic chutney sauce spread on each morsel.
In visiting with Leanne we learned Surf’s Up has been opened only nine weeks and during five of those weeks she has had groups of 20 or more guests at one time. She never ever prepares any thing in advance so every entrée and repast is made from scratch gourmet style, so be prepared to wait slightly longer than your average experience here in Mazatlán.
The hours of the restaurant are Wednesday to Saturday 8-4, Sunday brunch 10-4 and dinner by reservation only (phone 669-164-1896 for reservations). When we asked Leanne we learned that she would open during the evening with just a single guest request.
The prices for these gourmet dishes range from 80 pesos to150 pesos. The dishes we enjoyed on this day were 100 pesos. Breakfast is served at any time, and like the main menu it is definitely out of the ordinary and each offering sounds unusual and intriguing.
Pacifico beer is 20 pesos and most wines by the glass are approximately 50 pesos and by the bottle about 165 pesos. Alcoholic beverages are available.
Before tearing ourselves away from this magnificent setting and outstanding meal we learned that Leanne Wright owns and operates the adjacent El Sol La Vida Boutique and after viewing I can easily declare it is one of the nicest and most handsome B & Bs that we have visited in Mazatlán.
Kudos to Brad for recommending the review of “Surf’s Up.”
