UPDATED: Hotel Guest Responsible for Beating of Canadian at Mazatlán Resort

Filed under Local News 14 comments

UPDATED January 27, 6:00pm: The Mexican news site Linea Directa reported that Governor Mario López Valdez announced the apprehension of the Sheila Nabb attacker. Not wanting to give more details, he said a more detailed announcement would be made shortly.

Linea Directa also said the State Attorney, Marco Antonio Higuera Gómez, revealed the identity of the attacker. His name is Joseph Ramon Acosta, a native of Mazatlán. Ramon Acosta is a Mexican national who speaks English and reportedly frequented hotels and other tourist hotspots. Higuera Gómez said it was thanks to the video provided by the hotel that they were able to identify the offender, who pleaded guilty to these facts.

————————

The Hotel Riu is an all-inclusive Mazatlán resort hotel.

Sinaloa State Attorney General, Marco Antonio Higuera Gómez, told media yesterday that based on preliminary investigations they believe Canadian Sheila Nabb, who was severely beaten at the resort Hotel Riu last Friday, was attacked by a guest at the hotel.

Hotel video surveillance tapes from inside the elevator show movements inside the elevator including someone kicking or hitting with their feet, said the Attorney General.

The person attacking Ms. Nabb was dressed in shorts and a dark sweater and appeared to be around 25 years of age. His clothing made it clear that he was a guest and not an hotel employee who wear different clothing. Higuera Gómez reported that the identity and location of the attacker at this moment is unknown.

In the course of the investigation into the attack, the AG department investigated all guests registered in the hotel at the time resulting in an interview with a Canadian citizen who had been socializing with the victim and her husband. Media reported that the man interviewed had bruises on the knuckles of one hand and his chin.

Whether this person is the same who appears in the video, said Higuera Gómez, could be a coincidence and they will require the victim to identify her attacker. However, he went on to say, Ms. Nabb’s state of health at the moment makes it impossible for authorities to take her statement of the events.

According to Higuera Gómez, Ms. Nabb’s husband saw both the video surveillance tape and the tourist with bruised hands in the hope he could help the investigation, but he was unable to assist the investigation as he did not see what happened and was sleeping at the time of the attack on his wife.

The Attorney General advised that if the person responsible has left Mexico and flown to Canada or another country, there are channels open for them to continue the investigation independent of the country in which the suspect is found. As of yesterday, nine people have been interviewed concerning the incident.

Media also reported today that under strict security, Ms. Nabb was transported back to Canada last night where she will continue receiving medical treatment.

I certainly hope someone catches this cretin, especially before he has a chance to harm anyone else and puts him away for a good long time.

If this turns out to be a Canadian that did this will there be a travel advisory warning Canadians not to travel where other Canadians are travelling? The media and general public were awful quick to blame the Mexicans for this and I do hope every effort will be made to undo the damage Mazatlan has incurred although people tend to forget anything but the accusation. As a Canadian I hope it was another nationality but we have just as many rotten people as anywhere.Lets hope more information is forthcoming and soon to dispel all the rumors and get to the truth.

Of all the articles I have read on this incident, yours is by far the worst and most erroneous headline. I sincerely hope you have a complete retraction and apology in the next issue now that the world knows it was indeed a Mazatlan local Mexican national that perpetrated this horrific crime on a Canadian tourist. Shame on you for such an egregiously slanted headline.

Please note that it was Sinaloa State Attorney General, Marco Antonio Higuera Gómez, who told media yesterday that based on preliminary investigations they believe Canadian Sheila Nabb was attacked by a guest at the hotel. The Mazatlán Messenger reported his comments.

People up north fail to realize that a very high percentage of Riu guests are Mexican nationals. The headline is valid, however one can be excused for forgetting we can all be tourists in our oun country.
Glad to hear the investigation appears to have been successful. Now the question I have is this. Without the over the top Canadian media spotlight would this crime have been solved?

Did not mean to offend and apoligize if I did.Just saying that this is a rumor and media feeding frenzy with whatever is the flavour of the day and treated as fact when in fact the were none (publcly known at the time)

If the victim was repeatedly hit in the face and nowhere else, wouldn’t a profiler say that would be a crime of passion? Why would some guy who hangs around the hotel, hit the victim only in her face?! Also, why all of a sudden did he become violent, has this person been known to do that before? I had heard on some radio reports that the husband and wife were both in their room, and that there was blood found in the room – so the victim was punched in her face there and then taken out of the room. Was the husband asleep or passed out? Sounds kind of fishy right from the start…….Hope the Mexican government is not just succumbing to media frenzy and just finding someone guilty so that the hotel owners can lay it to rest.

entirely a possibility, Angel…this is so scandalous that the police have to find someone, anyone and do it quickly…there was a kidnapping 3 weeks ago and “los Zetas” (supposedly, often times “Zetas” is a catch word that includes everything and everybody that the police cannot solve) who did it were arrested mysteriously quickly and then were found dead less than a week later having “overdosed” in their jail cells…right here in town, hardly any press

A 72 year old man was beaten and robbed in his house last week. Police are still looking for the suspect but haven’t released any information yet. This happened in Vancouver, BC, so the report was buried in the local newspaper. I bet this guy wishes it happened in Mexico, he could have become a celebrity and have people donate money for his recovery. Perhaps the Canadian government should issue a travel advisory for his neighborhood. Since We can probably assume that the suspect is a Canadian citizen, maybe we should start bashing Canadians. This crime is no less serious than the attack here in Mexico, but receives no media attention anywhere or concern from fellow Canadian citizens.

    Case Solved:

Woman after a few drinks and verbal argument with her husband, leaves room at 3 AM to go for a walk and cool off. Drunken Mexican National staying at the hotel sees her and make a pass. She rejects him and it escalates from there…she slaps him..he loses it and beats her severely…probably some racial comments were spoken.

I for one would never let my wife walk around in any hotel at 3 AM…the only people who are out and about by then are drunks. Be aware of your surroundings and use your head.

I always tell my wife if you are ever acosted in a hotel lobby, corridor, elevator…..pull the fire alarm and when you get the chance one fist straight to the neck……I dont know anyone who can withstand a throat shot.

This whole story is bizarre beyond belief. Why was there bloom found in the room? Has this Mexican had a history of assaulting people? Why such fierce attacks to destroy her face…sounds more like a crime of passion, not stranger assault.

Where is the Canadian tourist who was parting with this mexican? is there information about this tourist in the Hotel computer, where is the information? and why this tourist left the hotel? he was part of it, if he didn’t do anything why does he have to run?, of course there is more to the history. I really hope she remember and clear this up. Even in your own town, you just both don’t get wasted, security reasons, safety reasons, if one wants to drink fine, the other should be not drinking, is the husband responsibility what happen to his wife too!, why will he leave her alone. Not cool.

I agree with Samantha. The other story printed here says the Canadian entered through the front door, and the guy who confessed entered through the beach. The Canadian had to have been a guest or he would have sneeked in with the Mexican, which brings us back to this story above where the Govt stated a Canadian guest was responsible and talked of extradition. When has anyone ever seen an accused give a confession to the media, in English, no less? He was live on GBL BC noon news hour! And who is missing a Canadian neighbor who fled from Mazatlan?
