Arrest Made in Canadian Tourist Beating Incident

Filed under Local News 21 comments

Robert Prosser, the uncle of Sheila Nabb, the Canadian who was brutally beaten in the Riu Hotel Saturday January 21st, told news networks that Nabb has returned to Canada. The CBC reported that she flew home last night with her sister.

CBC also reported this afternoon that Mexican authorities have made an arrest in the beating of Canadian tourist Sheila Nabb. The attacker was reportedly identified with a fingerprint and a blood sample.

The Mexican news site Linea Directa reported that Governor Mario López Valdez announced the apprehension of the Sheila Nabb attacker. Not wanting to give more details, he said a more detailed announcement would be made shortly.

Linea Directa also said the State Attorney, Marco Antonio Higuera Gómez, revealed the identity of the attacker. His name is Joseph Ramon Acosta, a native of Mazatlán. Ramon Acosta is a Mexican national who speaks English and reportedly frequented hotels and other tourist hotspots. Higuera Gómez said it was thanks to the video provided by the hotel that they were able to identify the offender, who pleaded guilty to these facts.

I would like to know what was Acosta’s motive, and why was she out of her room late at night while her husband was sleeping? If Acosta knocked on their door wouldn’t the husband wake up?

      Only Acosta can answer that…

    To Curious,

Obviously you have never gotten drunk on vacation before. Do you think it was POSSIBLE that the husband would not wake up to a knock on the door and maybe the wife would???

And yet it was an avoidable injury. She deserved a reminder that having cash for fancy hotels does not protect you. If you wander drunk, leave your hotelroom, and expect immunity, you are an idiot. You chose a cheap country for a great vacation and are still convinced that you should be safe. Not true. You take those dollars next time and pick somewhere with a better record of safety and preservation of life. Mexico is not that. If it was, it would not be such a great last minute deal. You have money, not a cloak of immunity and impermeability. Protect yourself better next time. Feeling entitled does not make it so.

      Memi
Harsch statement, she wasn’t wondering around downtown in the middle of the night. I have been going to Mazatlan for over 30 years, I feel safer there than at home in Canada. It was a very unfortunate event–now the whole city is suffering and the country of Mexico because of the actions of one man. I stayed at the Riu early this season and we never had any problems. Although, there was a situation where a drunk was violent, threw a security guard in the pool during the night. He was immediately expelled from the hotel. If the man caught is guilty, he reminds me of a Van Der Slut- type.

Actually Memi, for the number of tourists that travel to Mexico every year this is a rare occurrance. In tourist areas of the country safety is not an issue any more than in many other countries tourists frequent. There are lunatics everywhere in the world. No matter where you go or how much money you have you can never be 100% safe. Recently a couple of punks set a homeless guy on fire in Vancouver. Now that is sick! It is good to be aware of what is going on, but you can’t let these few incidents cause you to fear travelling. You just have to use common sense where ever you go.

Why does Mazatlan Messenger refer to her attacker as “hotel guest”? He is a local scumbag who needs to go to prison and meet “Bubba” so that see how it feels to be beat up!!

      Yani La Ching,

Did you not read the article in which that statement was included?
Let me repeat it for you: “Sinaloa State Attorney General, Marco Antonio Higuera Gómez, told media yesterday that based on preliminary investigations they believe Canadian Sheila Nabb, who was severely beaten at the resort Hotel Riu last Friday, was attacked by a guest at the hotel.”

As hopefully you can see, it was not the Mazatlan Messenger that refer to the attacker as a hotel guest, but the Sinaloa State Attorney. This was published on January 25th when it was said. Any other questions?

I don’t think it is safe to walk around any hotel, anywhere at 3:00AM…the people walking around at that time of the night are usually drunk and always looking for women. MY guess is he made a pass at her and she refused and it escalated from there. She may have slapped him and he retaliated and loss his temper.

Even in a nice hotel, nice country you still have to be aware of your surroundings. There is no way I would let my wife wonder around a hotel at 3:00 in the morning and I would think this lady had a few margaritas…..probably had a verbal disagreement with her husbanc and went for a walk to cool off……all of our wives and we have done that in the past.

The Maz Messenger is only repeating, as a service to us Gringos, what is published in the local news, and as of yesterday the attacker was a “tourist”. In today’s papers the attacker is being portrayed as a person that presented himself as a tourist and the Messenger has that story. I have not read anything that says this poor woman was “drunk” or otherwise.
This girl nor anyone deserves a beating. I know I go out of my way to converse with fellow tourists while in Maz, it is a natural thing to do. Over the years, I have golfed with strangers ( a standard procedure on the course), shared tables at the local hangouts, and even made dinner dates with similar “tourists”. And I have seen many others do the same. For Example, “Will you take our picture?” And then a conversation begins. I am just glad that they they caught this sick person and I pray the poor girl recovers and continues to enjoy life without fear.

Yesterday at 4 pm, my friend, a Canadian woman in her 60′s, was robbed right in front of her apartment. As she was walking home, 2 men got out of a car and walked towards her. The onwer tried fighting them off with a broom and the guard tried but they got her purse and drove away.

For what it’s worth Noroeste is presenting an entirely different account of how the perp ended up at the hotel. The story keeps evolving as facts( Ihope they’re facts) come out.

Unfortunately…it’s another black eye for Mazatlans’ already “tarnished” reputation. I was hoping it was a foreign visitor responsible for this “sick” attack. The U.S. press is going to go crazy over the revelation that a “local” was responsible!! Even though the poor victim was not a cruise ship passenger….the cruise lines will add this crime to their list of “reasons”…why Mazatlan is “unsafe”.

How incredibly ironic that the Riu all but forbids it’s Hotel guests from leaving the premises – citing too much danger and violence “outside” – and yet within their own walls such a horrific event happened. It’s sickening – on so many levels.

I think my comments above have showed that I was correct in my assessment as to what happened. As I read the paper today it says he was drinking and using drugs. Met her in the elevator…wouldnt let her leave….I wonder why…..making a pass at her …she screamed and he beat her……

I hold by my statement…….women should not be walking around anywhere by themselves at 3: 00 AM…..bad people are out that time of night looking for trouble.

Is there a possible revelation as to what may have provoked such a violent attack ? This morning´s Noroeste reports the woman victim was “allegedly naked”. In the same article, Noroeste reports that Acosta said : “A naked woman stepped onto the elevador.” Some unusual conduct may be “unsafe” almost anywhere.

WOW, the story just gets a little different everyday. The TV news in Canada, newspapers in Mexico, Canada, and the US are just reporting just about anything to keep you watching and buying.

What really happened that night ? Will Shelia remember? Is all the news reports going to be kept for her? Has she even told one written word of the attach? So many questions to be answered by all, Shelia, the victim, Acosta the said attacker, the husband, the Riu Hotel,

Wonder what tomorrow’s story line will be! I’m sure all of us will be wanting to know.

I Happen to love Mazatlan and I feel SAFE there! Truly is a very bad thing that happened but people look at where you live and tell that not one day goes by that something bad happens!!

Elderly being befriended by others, murdered and cut up, robbed in front of there houses, sex offenders distorting young innocent children, husbands and wives killing each other, must I go on?

What happens in your small town?

What’s missing in all these posts, which is concerning, is the perceived level of violence in this incident. It’s not clear, but there are implications that this assault was very violent and brutal, and that doesn’t happen everyday in the my town or mazatlan.

Regarding Acosta’s attack…we stayed at the Riu last Nov. Each day we left the Riu and wandered about Maz. The hotel seemed very safe, but then we do not wander about after dinner. One day..see the article in the Dec. Pacific Pearl Good Stuff: The Other Side of News in Mexico…I left my Lady’s tote bag on a Maz. bus. Most everyone said it will be gone. But we did not give up in trying to locate it. Everyone was very helpful. After 3 1/2 hours in and out of taxis and pulmeros, we finally came up behind the bus, and pulling it over, were very excited that the bus driver on Torrero lines..STILL HAD THE TOTE BAG !! So, we feel that Maz. is a good city and the locals are very nice. Friends ask aren’t you afraid to visit Mexico, we say, NO, we are more afraid to come home, for 2 days after returning to Indiana, I walked into a break in in my own home ! So tell me about being safe in Mexico. Viva Mazatlan !! Alan.
