Don and Connie Hancock with their prize.
It took the Hancocks, who were aboard the Paty C. of the BIBI Sportsfishing fleet, three hours to land the 3 meter shark caught on an 80lb line and six crew members to haul the fish onto the deck.
The manager of the fishing fleet explained they were accustomed to catching sharks in the range of 50, 60 and 90 kilos but they had not snagged one so large and heavy in many, many years.
The Mako shark is known for its incredible speed in the water, swimming up to 32km per hour. Prized by fisherman, it is recognized for its ability to jump out of the water and in several reported cases has actually jumped onto fishing boats.
